Using Distancing 'We' Language
Severity 3FramingStep 1Step 3Step 6Step 8
Uses distancing language like 'how we exploit' or 'ways we use animals' instead of direct personal accountability.
The give pair
Gives ammo
Look at the ways we exploit animals in these standard practices.
Gives nothing
How do you feel about you exploiting other animals for your purposes?
The round they fire back
Lets them discuss society or methods abstractly instead of their own responsibility.
How to fix it
Never say how we or ways we exploit. If you are vegan, do not include yourself with exploiters. Say you exploit them; I live vegan. Bystanders need to see they can join your side.
Coaching notes
- Third-person plural removes direct responsibility, speak to their choices.
- Vegan activists sometimes lump themselves in with non-vegans. Make the contrast clear: you, not we.
