Giving Them the Answer
Severity 3Method disciplineStep 3Step 5
States the conclusion (hypocrite, contradiction, must go vegan) instead of letting the non-vegan reach it through questions.
The give pair
Gives ammo
See, that means you're a hypocrite, you have to go vegan.
Gives nothing
Can you truly respect other animals if you use them for your purposes?
The round they fire back
Feels lectured at; shuts down before owning the contradiction themselves.
How to fix it
Ask step 3 and let them say it. Get them to call themselves a hypocrite, do not rush the label for them.
Coaching notes
- We are often too quick and give them the answer instead of them saying it.
- The problem with calling someone a hypocrite at question one is not that it is too direct, it is that you cannot know yet: you have not established whether they even claim to respect animals. A contradiction needs both halves stated before it exists.
- Once they have said they respect animals and acknowledged the contradiction, naming it directly is honest. Better still, ask step 3 and let them name it themselves.
- The difference between telling and asking is the difference between resistance and ownership.
