Demanding Language
Severity 3FramingStep 1Step 6Step 8
Uses 'demanding' or 'demand' to describe their responsibility, gives escape routes (someone else creates demand, leftovers, roadkill, gifts).
The give pair
Gives ammo
When you're not vegan, you are demanding this exploitation.
Gives nothing
As long as you're not vegan, these are your victims.
The round they fire back
Claims they don't 'demand' anything, eats leftovers, roadkill, or says someone else creates the demand.
How to fix it
Never say demanding. Say: these are your victims. You are responsible for exploiting them; payment and demand are irrelevant.
Coaching notes
- People exploit without paying, gifts, free zoo tickets, leftovers, roadkill.
- Someone else can create market demand; demanding language lets them dodge personal accountability.
- Never talk about supply and demand either, same escape route.
- Caution on 'This is happening because of you' while pointing at footage: the screen may show pork and the person may be vegetarian, so the specific footage may not be their doing. 'These are your victims' holds personal accountability without tying it to what happens to be on the screen.
