Engagement is control of attention. A question you leave unanswered is a door they walk through.
Three strikes — disengage
After three strikes, walk away. A strike is any deflection or failure to answer a question you asked (not just objections at step 7). Test with reassertion first; if they still will not engage after three strikes, disengage. Do not beg, debate whether they are dodging, insult them, or spend 30 minutes on someone unreachable.
Who you talk to matters
You can speak imperfectly to the right person and they still change. You can speak perfectly to the wrong person and they will not. Step 1 feeling question qualifies reachability. Do not beat yourself up when unreachable people deflect three times and you walk away.
Vegetarians are target market, not allies
When someone says 'I'm vegetarian' or 'I'm on your side,' respond: you are exactly who we need to talk to. Vegetarianism is not veganism. Outreach vegetarians with equal or greater vigor.
Gave ammo
Oh great, you're vegetarian — we're on the same side!
Gives nothing
No — you're our target market. Do you agree humans should live without exploiting other animals?
Plant-based is not veganism
Many who say they are vegan are plant-based — doing it for health or environment, not animals. Hold them accountable to the ethical principle, not diet.
When they lecture you on outreach
Non-vegans often tell you how to be more effective — meaning more comfortable for them. Turn it around: the first step for you is to live vegan because you are personally responsible.
Deflection or non-answer = strike
Any deflection or failure to answer a question you asked is one strike. The deflection loop (friendly tone, reframes exploitation, neutral ground, bigger picture, never answers feeling) is one of the most common real traps. Use the Deflection Loop scenario to practice judging continue vs disengage. After three strikes, plant the seed and walk away. Do not say why are you dodging or call them closed-minded.
Gave ammo
Non-vegan deflects on feeling three times. Activist: Why are you dodging? I will give you one more chance. You seem closed minded, bye.
Gives nothing
After third deflection on the same question: It seems you are not open to this. If you are not vegan, you are responsible for the exploitation of animals. [Walk away]
Deflection loop scenario (common trap)
One of the most common real outreach traps: a friendly non-vegan who sounds reasonable but will not answer how they feel about exploitation. They reframe the word, ask for neutral ground, debate your framing, and pivot to the bigger picture. Activists talk in circles and waste time. This is a perfect practice scenario to judge whether you will keep engaging or disengage after three strikes. Success = reassert the question once or twice, count deflections, plant the seed, walk away. Failure = debate dodging, extra chances, or minutes of circular talk.
Gave ammo
Six turns of reframing, common ground, and why are you dodging, never disengaging.
Gives nothing
Three deflections on feeling, one calm reassertion each time, then: It seems you are not open to this. [Walk away]
