The argument is about using someone who does not want to be used. Symptom talk about welfare and suffering hands over ground you cannot win back.
When you make it about suffering, harm, or how animals are treated, they think that is the problem to solve — humane farming, backyard eggs, better conditions. The problem is using someone for your purposes at all. See also: the symptom language trap.

When you frame the issue as suffering, harm, abuse, killing, or pain, the bystander agrees cruelty is bad. That feels like progress, but you set the wrong problem. They will try to solve suffering, not exploitation: humane farming, backyard eggs, roadkill, leftovers, hunting, rescued hens who 'choose' to lay. You end up adjudicating edge cases instead of holding them to respect and purposes. Recovery: stop debating whether their version is okay. Reassert step 3: can you truly respect other animals if you use them for your purposes? Or step 8: how many more should be exploited because of you, zero or more? The root wrong is using someone for your purposes, not how much they suffer.

Factory farming is a symptom of human supremacism — the idea that animals exist for us to use. Do not focus outreach on the industry, paying for products, or what is on the screens alone.
Never say support, paying, contributing, supply and demand, or demanding. All give escape routes, someone else creates demand, or they eat leftovers and roadkill. Say: these are your victims.

Do not ask how they would feel if this happened to a dog. Dogs are among the most exploited animals. Put the person you are speaking with in the victim's position: if this were happening to you, would it be acceptable?
racism or sexism comparisons can be made but are usually less effective than victim position, because anything outside themselves is outside their self-interest. Do not equate the bystander to Holocaust or racism as your main attack. Valid analogy: in the time of slavery, should we have fought for freedom or for slaves to be treated better? That highlights why welfarism is not enough without calling them a slave owner.

Do not talk about standard practices or undercover footage. Do not debate what is on screen as good or bad practice, the wrong is exploitation itself.

Never say contributing, supply and demand, or demanding, not direct responsibility and gives escape routes. They are victimizers; this is happening because of them.

Don't focus on symptoms, focus on the root problem. Symptoms include factory farming, industry, conditions, slaughterhouses, supply and demand, and treatment debates. Root: humans using other animals for their purposes (exploitation / human supremacism).
